Soft Gelatin Line

The worldwide consumption of soft capsules (pharmaceutical and nutraceutical) is increasing every year by approximately five to 10 per cent. Today, there are over 1,000 large soft gel encapsulation lines throughout the world, with an output of approximately 200 billion capsules a year Soft gel production is influenced by many elements that need to be controlled. Research and development into the soft gel encapsulation line has reached an advanced stage in recent years, providing in-house users with features of high output, automation and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) from certain encapsulation lines that guarantee that capsule production achieves unrivalled quality and capability. In fact it is the prerogative - not only of the pharmaceutical industry but also of the nutraceutical/food and cosmetic industry - to produce and sell quality. The absorption system is instrumental in the drying of capsules. A soft gel encapsulation area requires controlled humidity and temperature to ensure the proper drying of the fragile soft gelatine capsule. Initial drying is carried out in tumbler dryers where dry, sterile air supplied by the dehumidifier is forced across the tumbler and removes the moisture from the outer surface of the capsule. After the tumbler dryers, the soft capsules are placed on special trays for final drying in the drying room. During this important stage, moisture from inside the capsule is drawn to the surface and evaporated. If the product is dried too quickly, the outer surface of the capsule case hardens, sealing moisture inside the product. On the other hand, if the product is not completely dried, it is not suitable for packaging.

The Encapsulating Process

Gelatine Mass

The process of encapsulation is preceded by the creation of gelatine-based product and the filling of the capsule.

Encapsulation

The process of encapsulation is preceded by the creation of gelatine-based product and the filling of the capsule.

Tumble Drying

After encapsulation, the capsules are very soft and sticky due to the high moisture content and thin film of mineral oil remaining. The capsule tumbler dryer is used to remove the mineral oil and accelerate the drying process. Dry, sterile air is forced across the tumbler and removes the moisture from the outer surface of the capsule.

Supplemental Drying (Curing)

After the tumbler dryers, the soft capsules are placed on special trays for final drying in the drying room (see Figure 2). The capsules are moved into drying rooms where dry air is circulated around them for a period of up to 48 hours. During this important stage, moisture from inside the capsule is drawn to the surface and evaporated. If the product is dried too quickly, the outer surface of the capsule case hardens, sealing moisture inside the product. On the other hand, if the product is not dried completely, it is not suitable for packaging. Soft gel production is influenced by many elements that need to be controlled. To obtain the appropriate quality of the soft gel capsules, it is necessary to control the humidity and temperature accurately.
